WEEK 08 - Scales & Archers: Five (5) Favourite Things About Festive Seasons

Week 8 has come. That’s two months down for this year, and I’m still pumped. With the Lunar New Year coming to its 15-day end today, here are my five favourite things about festive seasons.

Week 8 has come, so that means I have 44 more weeks to go. That’s two months down for this year, and I’m still pumped. With the Lunar New Year coming to its 15-day end today, here are my five favourite things about festive seasons - whether they’re the New Year or not:

Public Holiday!

I mean, that’s the obvious aspect right?

A day off from work, and a day to catch up on whatever we wanted to. Usually, the public holiday aspect of festive seasons are my days to either pump up the writing machine within me, plan and reflect (this particularly stands out during December festivals), or just spend time with friends and family. That said…

Family - Found or Otherwise

Many festivals serve as a reason for extended family to get together. With our lives busier than ever, and with the current restrictions, this gives us the chance to be as intentional as possible. For me, it’s always a food-related gathering with close-knit friends or an evening session with my maternal cousins. Speaking of which...

Mahjong

Anytime to take out the set and table!

Even when I wasn’t playing, mahjong was a huge part of my childhood - the clattering of tiles, none of the adults bothering your play time, the satisfaction you feel when you hear a “PONG!”.

These days, mahjong means a chance to spend more time with friends and family. (And exchange silly banter when we ‘call’ for tiles or entertain the rest of the table with our antics)

That said, I’m looking for that time for my usual gang to come over and learn mahjong - like they keep asking for. LOL.

P/S - we do not gamble when we play mahjong. I do feel that it ups unnecessary pressure and takes away the fun of it all.

ALL THE SNACKS

Mum’s chocolate chip cookes.

Honey Joys.

Need I say more?

Just the General Atmosphere of it All

Festive seasons are called them for a reason, I guess. And what I do like about them in general is this overall atmosphere where there’s a bit less obligation or expectation to “stay on top of things”. At least, that’s where I come from.

Just the general atmosphere of being with family (found or otherwise), within your zone of comfort, even if it’s just for that few days. I guess that’s what we all look forward to during the holidays.

And that’s it from me! See you all next week!
