WEEK 15 - JewelVerse: Introducing Characters - Morganite

Week 15 down, and we have dove into the second quarter of the year with barely more than a blink of an eye.

So I released character cards for the Unstable Branch, one of the storylines set in the JewelVerse, a good few months back. Therefore, I thought this would be a good time to introduce the characters featured in the cards to all of you - with Madeline and Nathaniel within this newsletter’s past orbits, here’s someone new.

Unstable Branch?

The Unstable Branch of the JewelVerse started with a comic I created with artist Elvin Ching. Named “Unstable Foundations”, it was a thriller/contemporary comic centered on National Gallery intern Madeline Law and her heist-planning cousin, Nathaniel Tan. After the release of the comic, I dove into the world of these cousins and thought - there’s a whole line of potential for world-building and adventure there. Hence, the Unstable Branch was extended with eChapBook “Unstable Directions”, released the middle of 2020.

Pink Lady? Morganite? Pink Lady?

The Pink Lady, formally known as Morganite, showed up in Madeline and Nathaniel’s lives at the most convenient of times. Morganite is only contactable through a number that she gave to both of them. So far, she has never failed to pick up.

Little is known about Morganite, except for how she often has a solution to all the issues Madeline and Nathaniel have brought to her. From the advice she’s given, it can be inferred that, on a fundamental level, she has access to an extensive network of specialists, including locksmiths (code for those who make puzzle boxes), surveyors (those who track items), doctors in alternative medicine, and alleged undercover managers.

While it’s likely that Morganite answers to an employer, nothing is currently known about this relationship. The sole hint of Morganite’s true intentions lies with the only found conversation between her and her employer (?)—an individual known only as Obsidian—where the subject of auctions and underground dealings with valuable artefacts was brought up.

Regardless, and though transactional with her communication with Madeline and Nathaniel, she remains a lifeline to the cousins in circumstances that defy present logic.

So What’s Next?

I’d like all of you to slowly meet the characters I have in the Unstable Branch. And now with the end of the trio of main characters saying hi to all of you, I’m excited to dive deeper into the world - whether it’s talking to all of you about the characters, their coming stories, or the world in general.

Creating “Unstable Directions” pretty much got me to sit down with Madeline and Nathaniel, and now Morganite, quite a bit - something that I admit to not doing as much as I wanted to earlier. With the eChapBook out and these characters becoming more fully formed, I’m getting more excited with what this branch within the JewelVerse will bring. So stay tuned for more stories, character profiles, and worlds!
